Get your fill of American history at the Historic Battlefield Trail in Brownsville, Texas. This unique 10 mile rail-trail runs from the heart of Brownsville in the south through the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park to Los Fresnos in the north. The prairie of Palo Alto, recently preserved by the National Park Service, was the site of the first battle of the Mexican-American War in 1846. The war literally changed the map of North America: Prior to the war, the Republic of Texas (and later the United States) claimed the Rio Grande River as its southern boundary, while Mexico claimed the border farther north at the Nueces River.
Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park is the site of the first major battle of the U.S.-Mexican War. Visitors can experience a landscape almost as it existed on the day of the battle. The park enjoys the unique distinction of being the only National Park Service unit to interpret the U.S.-Mexican War.
Together with the Resaca de la Palma Battlefield unit, Palo Alto Battlefield provides an opportunity to learn about the war, its causes and consequences, and its impact on the relationship between the U.S. and Mexico.

Established in 1943 for the protection of migratory birds, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge happens to be positioned along an east-west and north-south juncture of two major migratory routes for many species of birds. It is also at the northern-most point for many species whose range extends south into Central and South America. The refuge is right in the middle of all this biological diversity, which is what makes this 2,088 acre parcel the ‘jewel of the National Wildlife Refuge System.’ Though small in size, Santa Ana offers visitors an opportunity to see birds, butterflies and many other species not found anywhere else in the United States beyond deep South Texas.

Harlingen’s most recognizable heritage tourism attraction is the Iwo Jima Monument. This massive structure is the original working model used by sculptor Dr. Felix de Weldon in his casting of the official bronze version in Washington, D.C. The monument is as powerful as the true rendering, with its six inspirational figures stirring strong patriotic emotions among the veterans and visitors who make regular pilgrimages to the memorial. Dr. de Weldon donated the structure to the nearby Marine Military Academy as an inspiration to young cadets, also considering the regional connection to one of the soldiers depicted in the monument and the area’s ideal temperatures. Be sure to visit the adjacent museum and gift shop associated with the Marine Military Academy. The museum contains exhibits and displays primarily related to the U.S. Marine Corps, including the Iwo Jima Veterans Hall of Fame and an educational and stirring film about the Battle for Iwo Jima.

La Lomita (the hillock) was first built in 1865 by Rene Guyard, a French merchant of Reynosa, who had purchased the land in 1845. Guyard left this site and porciones 55 and 57 to the Oblate priests in 1871. La Lomita became an important site for the Calvary of Christ, the Oblate missionaries who rode up and down the Rio Grande Valley visiting widely separated Catholic churches, baptizing newborns, performing marriage ceremonies and blessing the dead. When the City of Mission, Texas was founded in 1908, the city was named “Mission” in honor of La Lomita Chapel.
